Y.G.G. (And if you don't know what that stands for, you should)

That would be Yo Gabba Gabba.

Tonight, we will be seeing the magic live.  Live!  DJ Lance in the flesh.

Maybe some people reading this are professional people with no kids.  Maybe you have kids, but they are too old to watch Yo Gabba Gabba.  Or, perhaps you have kids but you (gasp!!!) don't watch Yo Gabba Gabba.  You're probably thinking, why should I continue reading this crap post?  Maybe you've stopped reading already.

Why?  Only because Yo Gabba Gabba it is the most unbelievable, entertaining, creative, educational, college student stoned enjoyment to have ever graced the television.  This is no Blues Clues, people.  It's bizarre.  Eccentric.  Odd.  So odd, in fact, that it can be nothing but brilliant.  If you find yourself saying, "Who thinks of this crap and what are they smoking" multiple times over a thirty minute episode, you know your time is well spent. Oh, and Braden loves it too.

Lets go over the cast of characters, shall we?

DJ Lance

The Godfather of YGG Land

Oh DJ Lance, how I love thee.  The dance moves.  The voice.  The blindingly white teeth.  The creepy old man smile that somehow becomes endearing.  Who is this person? I mean really?  Gay?  Straight?  Does he drink beer on the weekends?  I don't know the answer to these questions, and I suppose the answers don't matter.  All I know, is he makes the magic happen.

Halloween, 2010 - not feeling the DJ Lance love.

This picture really has no relevance, I just had to include it here.  He refused to wear the hat.

Leslie

This is Leslie.  Leslie is not in every episode, but she is awesome.  She sings.  She dances.  She does glitter hands.  She makes a fool out of herself. She always rocks a skin tight jumpsuit, and it isn't always so flattering.  She doesn't care.  I LOVE THAT!  Razzle Dazzle.

Devo

Remember that song, "Whip It" from the 80s, by Devo?  Well, naturally when his music career started waning, he decided to become an amateur artist and draw pictures on Yo Gabba Gabba.  Duh!  He draws all sorts of pictures, like cats and elephants and bugs on skateboards and himself drawing pictures of himself drawing pictures of himself.  Oh, and he also sings occasionally on the show.  Duh!

The Non-Human Cast of Characters

 And from Left to Right;

Foofa - One of the two girls of the bunch (I guess there are males and females?).  Braden has a weird crush on her.  She loves flowers.  Like, REALLY loves flowers.  Watering them.  Petting them.  Watching them.  Probably doing weird stuff with them.

Muno - This guy is the most well known, but I'm not sure why.  Maybe because he is slightly phallic, and has tiny bumps all over his body?  He has a weird high pitched voice.  He has a little brother.  He got a contact lens once.

Plex - He's a robot.  He's kind of the leader of Gabba land, since he is electrical and has superior intelligence and stuff.  He plays the keytar. No, not a guitar.  A keytar.  He teaches life lessons, like not to bite our friends, how to brush your teeth, and how to make lemonade (with lemons and honey?  yuck).

Tutti- The other female.  I have to say, I think she's kind of worthless.  My only complaint about the show.  Come on Yo Gabba Gabba - give us another strong female!

Brobee - Brobee is a sympathetic character, as I believe he is bipolar.  He is the only character whose face changes expressions.  He can go from happy to sad just like that.  I hope he is getting the necessary support and medication.  In any event, he tries a lot of new foods.  There's a party in his tummy.

B List Celebrities
This show is so good that B list celebrities are now jumping on board.  That's right, Yo Gabba Gabba has featured Weird Al Yankovic (okay, maybe he's D list), Andy Samberg, Solange Knowles (the sister, it's the sister!), Jack McBrayer, Paul Scheer, Elijah Wood, Sarah Silverman, Jack Black (in the best episode EVER), Weezer, The Roots and most recently, Fred Armisen.   There's lots more, I'm sure - feel free to give a shout out to some of the ones I have missed.

  1. Thanks for letting me know this was playing tonight! I just purchased tickets - the kids are going to LOVE it! I don't know what this says about me, but I did refrain from sharing on facebook. Not everyone appreciates YGG as much as I do AND the 24 minutes of peace.

  2. That was fantastic. I agree that Brobee is bipolar or at least manic depressive. His mood changes at very random times during the episodes. Have fun with the kids tonight! Can your next TV-themed post be a breakdown of the "characters" on Teen Mom (go Gary!)??

  4. Dude. YGG is AWFUL. There's a party in my tummy! So yummy! So yummy! Those are not lyrics. I am eternally thankful that my kid was at the next stage of television just as YGG began to air. I would suggest going to a live Wiggles show. Look for the women that go to the show with no children. That's right. You heard me. No. Children. Now that is some good funny.

  5. We love this in our house! My hubs is a big indie music fan and so gets really into the musical acts on the show.

And my 3 year old says "tiny ugly germs!" every time something falls on the ground.

Love it! And love the blog. I just recently started reading - I found you on the MILP blogroll - but it's great!

  6. An update - the show was FANTASTIC!

    High points:
    - The adrenaline rush felt by all when DJ Lance came on stage - I swear, my husband and I were more excited than Braden.
    - The dancing food products in the aisle during the rendition of "There's a Party in my Tummy" (see clip above).
    - Bizz's beat of the day (yes, he actually tours with them. And for those of you that don't know, this is the guy that sang the classic "You Say She's Just a Friend")
    - The fact that the concert venue served both beer AND Chick-Fil-A.

    Low Points -
    - Super Music Friends Show - weird guy with hula hoops I'd never heard of.
    - The fact that Leslie has lost crazy weight and no longer looked chunky in her jumpsuit. Wasn't that her shtick?
    - Crazy flashing lights that caused twenty something girl in front of us to have a seizure. Yes, I am serious! All of a sudden she was hunched over and paramedics were everywhere. Very scary. A bit of a buzz kill.

Braden's comment of the night, after the show as we were walking to our car:
"Mommy, when we get home, can we watch Gabba, please?"

  7. As new parents, we are just getting acquainted with YGG. The other day, J.D. came to me and said, "I think I might have taken some LSD without realizing." I followed him into the living room and saw it: YO GABBA GABBA!

    Hope you guys had fun!!

  8. I don't get high. I've never gotten high. But YGG has always struck me as the kind of thing I would REALLY think is AWESOME... high.

(There have been some good moments with the guest stars.... and how did you miss Bizz in your initial description of the show? He's the best!)

  9. It's horrible! But it's amusing to know that lots of parents like it :-).

  10. I agree, it's the best show ever, unfortunately the girls are growing out of it. Sadness. Glad you had fun at the concert! We went last year and I loved it.

  11. This post is a RIOT. I'm a lawyer with no kids (yet), and honestly had to hide my laughter at my desk. The blog is great!

  12. @9:59, thank you so much! And just because you have no kids does not mean that you cannot enjoy some quality YGG. My husband and I may or may not watch it without the kids at times .... though usually some alcohol is involved.
